As a long time solo female traveler, I have picked up some tried and true tips along the way, to be a successful and safe traveler.

  • Keep a journal
    • I don’t know about you, (but I’m feeling 22) but I have a hard time remembering what I did the day before, heck sometimes even that day! So, journaling on my trip is super important. I not only use the journal to write down my inner thoughts at any moment, but I also write down the places that I visited or dined at, any people I meet along the way, and yummy foods Ive eaten. This comes in handy when I am giving y’all some travel tips! Any journal will work: paper or digital. Your choice. I picked up Nomadic Matt’s Travel Journal for my next trip, so I’ll def check back in with y’all on how I like it.
  • Don’t overshare
    • Listen, sometimes it is not safe out there for a womanMake sure you’re not sharing your hotel information or any of your travel plans with strangers, unless you’re totally comfortable. In fact, change your name and make up a story. Be a new version of yourself!!! That might be fun too! Hi, my name is Donna Martin and I’m from Beverly Hills.
  • Put a ring on it!
    • I don’t know why, but for some reason wearing a wedding/engagement ring keeps the creeps away. Make sure though, that you aren’t wearing something flashy as that can put a different target on you. If someone comes up to you and you’re not interested, just say that your partner will be joining you shortly, they’re in the bathroom, or to kindly fuck off. Honestly, say your piece. No means no.
  • Wake up early
    • Did you know that you could have an unobstructed view to basically any iconic place in any city? Do you want a picture in front of the Eiffel Tower with no one in the background? How bout the Trevi Fountain in Rome? I’m here to tell you friends, it’s possible. Getting up and out early, and beating the crowds is the best way to achieve this. Not only do you get to experience this bit of quiet reflection but that early morning lighting is perfection. This tip is not necessarily just for solo female travelers, it’s just a good idea for one and all.
  • Be confident
    • Lastly, be confident. For me, that means researching a ton ahead of time. When I get off a train or a bus, I want to know exactly where I am and which direction I need to be heading in. It can also mean having the confidence to go out to eat alone. Guys, guess what, if you are traveling solo, you are already confident! It may not seem like it, you may not feel like it, but just the simple act of traveling alone builds confidence and allows your independence to shine through. Once you start to feel confident, others will notice it too. You are a total badass. If no one told you today how proud they are of you for traveling alone, let me tell you. I am so proud of you. I am incredibly impressed and in awe of your strength and courage. Get it!
